Acupuncture in Office at Five Pins Project 491 Guerrero at 17th St

Acupuncture is the insertion of sterile, disposable, hair-thin needles into specific sites on the body known as acupuncture points. Each acupuncture point runs along an energetic pathway called a meridian and has a specific function to effect physiological change in the body. The location of these points were discovered and mapped out thousands of years ago, recently, electromagnetic research has confirmed their existence and location.

How Acupuncture Works
According to Chinese medical theory, a vital energy called Qi (think nervous system, circulation, blood flow, oxygen) runs in a circuit through the human body. If the flow of Qi through this circuit is disrupted (through stress, trauma, injury, poor nutrition, etc.), it will cause an imbalance in the body and lead to symptoms of one kind or another, such as pain. Through the use of acupuncture we can reestablish the flow of Qi, to help re-create balance, and activate the body’s innate internal healing ability. Western science now acknowledges the effects of acupuncture on many of the body’s systems, including the neurological, endocrine, respiratory, and digestive systems.

NINAH HOFMANN, L.Ac.

Ninah Hofmann, L.Ac., has been practicing acupuncture in San Francisco since 2005. She is a California and NCCAOM licensed acupuncturist, graduating from Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College, Berkeley, in 2004 with a Master of Science degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine. As a child Ninah foraged wild herbs, reading about their healing properties in herbal medicine books from the 60’s and 70’s. When first introduced to Chinese medicine at 17, she felt an immediate connection to its philosophy, a philosophy, which weaves our body’s health into the macrocosm of nature. This approach to health takes into account our relationship with the natural world, something from which we have been cut off within the context of Allopathic medicine. Aware of the vast disparities in accessible health care, Ninah opened Community Acupuncture Works (CAW) in July 2008, which served the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District of San Francisco and beyond. During the 12 years of operating and practicing in her busy high volume community acupuncture clinic Ninah gained immense experience in treating a varied and diverse group of patients with a wide range of health conditions. In 2015 Ninah worked as an acupuncturist on a UCSF Osher Center study “Group Acupuncture for Painful Diabetic Neuropathy” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7247034/ which took place at her clinic, CAW. In 2019 Ninah co-created a continuing education class on the role of acupuncture in regulating the nervous system as a way to help manage autoimmunity and chronic pain. Ninah’s compassionate and empathetic manner help guide her approach to treatment. She believes the powerful effect acupuncture has on our body and nervous system is one of the best tools we have to deeply connect us to our body’s innate healing capacity. The Covid-19 pandemic forced the closure of Community Acupuncture Works in June 2020. Ninah is now transitioning into new ways of providing care in as safe a manner as possible, observing all protocols for the safety and wellbeing of both patient and practitioner. Ninah enjoys being outdoors, going on walks with friends, thrifting, flea markets, garage sales and estate sales as well as, reading, listening to music, cooking and spending time with family, friends and her beloved cat buddies, Maeve and Hattie.
